This June, we focus on staying prepared, honoring those who have served, supporting our families, and promoting mental wellness through Hurricane Preparedness Month, Women Veterans Day, Father’s Day, and PTSD Awareness Month.
Hurricane season officially begins on 1 June, making now the perfect time to review emergency plans, update important documents, and build emergency supply kits. Being prepared before a storm develops helps ensure the safety and resilience of military members, families, and the entire Joint Base Charleston community.
Women Veterans Day is observed annually on 12 June to recognize and celebrate the service, sacrifice, and achievements of women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. The date commemorates the signing of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act of 1948, which granted women the right to serve as permanent, regular members of the military. Today, women continue to play vital roles across all branches and career fields, contributing to national defense with courage, leadership, and dedication. Women Veterans Day provides an opportunity to honor their legacy, acknowledge their contributions, and inspire future generations of military women.
Father’s Day recognizes the important role fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers, mentors, and caregivers play in strengthening families and communities. Military fathers often balance service commitments with family responsibilities, demonstrating dedication both at home and in uniform.
PTSD Awareness Month helps educate communities about post-traumatic stress and encourages those who may be struggling to seek support. Recovery is possible, and resources are available for service members, veterans, and family members.
